Georgia is the tournament’s Cinderella, reaching the Knockout Stage after earning the nation’s first win in a major tournament on Matchday 3 against Portugal. Georgia was in position to make a run to the Round of 16 thanks to a 1-1 draw against Czechia in Matchday 2 to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to Turkey in Georgia’s European Championship debut.

The winner of this match takes on Germany in the quarterfinals after the host nation defeated Denmark 2-0 in their Round of 16 match.

Spain takes on Georgia in the round of 16 at Euro 2024 on Sunday. Spain is widely considered one of the tournament favorites after winning all three of its group games, but Georgia produced the shock result of Euro 2024 so far by beating Portugal. Fitness could be crucial. Spain hasn’t played since Monday and was able to change 10 players from its lineup against Albania. Georgia, by contrast, was pushed to the limit against Portugal on Wednesday and is playing again four days later.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has his full squad available as midfielder Rodri returns from a one-game suspension. Three defenders, including right back Dani Carvajal, would miss a potential quarterfinal if they’re booked against Georgia.

Georgia is full of confidence because “we have absolutely nothing to lose,” Sagnol said Saturday, adding: “For me, we already won (Euro) 2024.”

Georgia midfielder Anzor Mekvabishvili is suspended after a yellow card against Portugal. Captain and defender Guram Kashia is one of four players who are one yellow card away from a suspension.

Georgian striker Georges Mikautadze was the surprise top scorer of any team in the Euro 2024 group stage with three goals, including a penalty against Portugal. None of Spain’s players have scored more than once.

Meanwhile, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Co. powered their way to the knockouts courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Portugal in their final group game which enabled Georgia to finish second among the third-placed teams.

Rodri returns from a one-match ban and should slot right back in head coach Luis de la Fuente's XI for Sunday's tie after several changes in the Albania win.

Nacho and Ayoze Perez emerge as fitness doubts, while Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres may need to settle for a spot on the bench once again as Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams will expect recalls to feature alongside Alvaro Morata.

Midfielder Anzor Mekvabishvili will miss out on account of a suspension, with Solomon Kvirkvelia to be brought back in the XI.

Georgia boss Willy Sagnol will be counting on attackers Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Georges Mikautadze to add to their respective goal tallies, with goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili eyeing another clean sheet.

The latter made history by reaching the knockout stages in their first ever major tournament courtesy of a 2-0 win over Portugal in their final game in Group E – in what was surely the greatest night in Georgian football history.

That could yet be topped if Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and his teammates, who to a man were outstanding on Wednesday evening, can topple one of the favourites to win Euro 2024.

Spain are the only side to win all three of their games on their way to the knockout stages – proving too good for Croatia, Italy and Albania as they topped Group B without conceding a goal.

In young wing duo Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, they look to have the firepower to go all the way, but all the pressure will be on them against neutrals' favourites Georgia.

The winner of Germany v Denmark waits in the next round, while Belgium, France and Portugal are also on this side of the draw, so Luis de la Fuente may be keen for his team to send a message on Sunday - but this is tournament football, and nothing is a given.
